I recently had the great pleasure of being interviewed by Dr. Baker for her “Go Friend Your Self” podcast. First, I’ll introduce Dr. Baker and the podcast, then I’ll give a brief preview of our interview. Finally, I’ll provide a link to the podcast interview at the end of this post.
The “Go Friend Your Self” podcast describes itself in this way: “From worst critic to best friend, join a community of individuals who transform their lives by changing the way they treat themselves.” Dr. Baker, the podcast’s host, is a licensed clinical psychologist who has her own independent psychology practice in California.
Dr. Baker started the “Go Friend Your Self” podcast in 2017. Topics on the podcast have spanned a wide range of mental health and wellness issues, including anxiety, sadness, guilt, anger, stress, relationships, motivation and many more. In addition to the podcast, Dr. Baker has an active social media presence on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and Instagram.
Dr. Baker and I connected recently on social media and I immediately began binge listening to her podcast. I’ve been very impressed not only by her wide breadth of knowledge and the helpful strategies she describes for improving mental health and wellness, but also by her supportive and compassionate demeanor. She has also candidly shared some of her own struggles with anxiety and how she has sought therapy to better cope with these issues.
When Dr. Baker invited me to be a guest on the podcast, I accepted without hesitation. While we tossed around a few different ideas for topics to talk about, we ultimately decided we would keep the discussion open and flexible. As it turned out, we covered a lot of territory!
In our interview, Dr. Baker and I start out by talking about my “Stories of Hope” series, in which I’ve done about 50 interviews with people who share their mental health journeys in a courageous, honest and inspiring way. You can check out the whole series of these interviews here.
Dr. Baker and I then touch on several additional issues, including the importance of asking for help with mental health concerns, the vital role of support and resilience in the recovery process, factors involved in finding a therapist who is a good fit for you, how to find effective self-help resources, and how to begin to re-establish hope when dealing with mental health challenges.
