I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Robert Vore for the CXMH Podcast. Let me first tell you a little about Robert and the podcast, then we’ll dive into a little preview of what we discussed on the podcast. If you can’t wait and want to jump right over to hear the podcast, the link is at the end of this post.
The CXMH Podcast describes itself as “a podcast on faith and mental health.” Robert Vore, who hosts the podcast, has worked in several ministries and non-profit organizations throughout the southeast United States. He is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling.
In addition to the podcast, Robert has been an active mental health advocate on social media including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and Instagram. He started the CXMH podcast in 2016, and since then, he has featured leaders from both the faith and mental health communities. Accordingly, topics on the podcast have spanned a wide range of issues concerning mental illness, suicide prevention, grief and loss, the role of faith communities in mental health, and much, much more.
When Robert approached me about interviewing me for the podcast, I was excited to be involved. I had already listened to several of the podcast episodes and I was impressed both by the variety of guests and topics and by Robert’s supportive and engaging interview style and his knowledge of the topics being discussed.
We decided to focus our interview on a topic I had previously written about on this blog: the numerous reasons why people with mental illness don’t get treatment. I first covered this topic in a post called “8 Reasons Why People Don’t Get Treatment for Mental Illness.” As I’ve noted before, this has been my single most popular post since beginning my blog over three years ago. Even to this day, it is typically the post which gets the most daily page views. Clearly this post has had staying power!
More recently, I wrote a follow-up post called “Overcoming the 8 Reasons Why People Don’t Get Treatment for Mental Illness.” While not quite as popular as the original post, this one has also gotten a lot of interest and has generated many comments and questions.
In our CXMH podcast interview, Robert and I unpack both of these posts and cover not only all of the 8 reasons why people don’t get treatment, but possible strategies to begin to combat or overcome each of the barriers so that people may be able to begin to receive the mental health treatment they need.
Along the way, Robert and I get into some of the issues surrounding the pervasive stigma and discrimination toward people with mental illness. We also discuss some simple ways to get involved in mental health advocacy. Finally, we touch on how faith communities can benefit from health and wellness ministries to provide awareness events and resources to help improve both physical and mental health.

Thanks again to Robert Vore for inviting me to be on the CXMH Podcast!
