I’m often asked, “How can I be more active on social media to advocate for mental health?” and “What kinds of content can I share on social media related to mental health that will be of interest?”
These are great questions, and I have a few suggestions for you. Here’s my unofficial list of 10 types of mental health content you can share on social media. I’ve tried to include both quick and simple examples for each type of content, along with ways to produce original content of your own (which will of course require more time and effort).
Quotes
This type of content includes inspiring and positive quotes related to mental health, wellness, and self-care. You can easily find lots of quotes online. Some quotes may be from famous people, while others are from everyday folks. Or you may have your own quotes to share.
Local events
Here you can share announcements about upcoming events that focus on mental health awareness. These may include fundraisers for charitable organizations, educational classes, or screenings of films and documentaries with a mental health focus.
Groups
Share links to online and in-person groups devoted to mental health. There is a huge variety of mental health groups on Facebook. Also, there will be lots of local support, educational and self-help groups in your community you can call attention to.
Videos
Share links to videos featuring mental health topics, commentaries by mental health experts and advocates, or other videos which simply promote mind/body health and wellness. As a more intensive endeavor, create and post your own videos related to mental health issues.
Blog posts
There are many, many mental health bloggers out there (including me!) who share lots of useful content related to mental health. All you have to do is share the link to your favorite mental health blogger’s content. If you’re feeling industrious, start your own mental health blog!
Podcasts
The podcast world has exploded exponentially, with thousands of shows being offered, and more added all the time. Share links to the podcasts you enjoy which discuss mental health issues. You can also volunteer to be a guest on a mental health podcast, or start your own show.
First-person accounts
More and more people are opening up with candor and courage to share their own personal mental health experiences, through many different social media formats and channels. Post links to some of these stories, or considering sharing your own story if you feel comfortable in doing so. (Also check out my “Stories of Hope” series for dozens of these inspiring accounts!)
Research
Scientists continually publish cutting-edge research about new advances in mental health. Share links to online research articles, or published synopses of mental health research. You can also link to a mental health researcher’s home page to spotlight their work to your social media audience.
Articles and books
There are many great books and articles online and in mainstream print media about mental health topics. Share links to these resources and invite feedback and discussion to engage your social media audience more fully.
Advocacy
I saved my favorite one for last. You can share many types of content related to mental health advocacy efforts. Link to mental health advocates’ pages, share articles about current state and Federal legislative advocacy initiatives around mental health issues, and promote worthy causes whose focus is on improving the mental health system.
I hope these ideas convey that it’s really quite easy to find lots of great mental health content to share on social media. I’ll add one final thought. Always try to share content from reputable organizations and from those whose work is grounded in data and science. Now get out there and promote mental health!
Here’s a question: What are some other examples of mental health content you can share on social media? Please leave a comment.
